Curriculum

We
believe ‘how’ we are learning is as important as ‘what’ we
are learning and we want that learning to be enjoyable and
meaningful.
Everyone, children and
adults, in our community is a learner. The atmosphere that
fosters the most effective learning is one that is relaxed
and happy, where we are absorbed in active tasks that are
relevant to our interests and needs. We encourage children
to take ownership of appropriate aspects of school life.
This is illustrated by the important role taken by the
School Council and the children’s significant input to
developments in school, such as the use and provision of
Information Technology.
We believe in people
being able to take learning risks and make mistakes! It’s
alright, because Askrigg is a learning place.
It is often best to learn
in a realistic context where there are valid reasons for
learning new skills and concepts. We aim to provide a
flexible learning environment, that allows children to
engage in a variety of ways with their learning. We are
developing a curriculum, driven by questions and the pursuit
of resolving challenges.
We
adopt a child centred approach beginning from where the
children are in their understanding and design activities
that are aimed at developing their skills and knowledge.
The children are
encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and
to use their natural desire to explore, to underpin their
learning and enquiry.
All the usual subject
matter is taught in a variety of ways. We aim to develop
themes such as ‘Crystal Maze Maths Days’, ‘ Whole School
Productions’, ‘Community Story Telling Festivals’, ‘Art
Exhibitions’, ‘Film Nights (W.A.F.T.A.S)’, ‘Music Festivals’
and other core events to draw the children and the community
into the world of learning.
We are fortunate at
Askrigg to have access to excellent outdoor and sporting
facilities. We aim to use these to full effect. Encouraging
involvement in a variety of sports and outdoor activities,
both competitively and socially. We greatly value the
support the community gives to these objectives.
We
also seek to enhance the curriculum by using the outdoor
areas, available to us, as extensions to our indoor
environment. Thereby promoting the belief that learning is a
dynamic experience that children and adults can pursue
everywhere and throughout their lives.
We want to inspire
through creative teaching, we see learning processes and
imagination, excitement and engagement at the centre of our
school curriculum.

Askrigg is a warm and
welcoming community. At Askrigg School we seek to promote
the spiritual wellbeing and understanding of all people.
